A Physics of Meaning

The Research Program

Companion to "The Fields of Meaning"

The essay enacts. This document specifies.

"The Fields of Meaning" makes its case the way the framework prefers to work — by moving through the thing rather than describing it from above. But the essay borrows a heavy word. It calls itself a physics. A careful reader is right to ask what would have to be true for that word to be earned, and honesty requires answering plainly rather than letting the metaphor do work it hasn't paid for.

So here is the plain answer. What the essay offers is a dynamic model, not yet a physics in the strict sense. It shows interacting variables, probability rather than strict determination, feedback that loops across scales, and concentrations that alter the paths around them. That is real, and it is more than a taxonomy. But a physics, properly speaking, asks for more: defined variables, lawful relations between them, and propositions specific enough that some observation could show them false.

This document names those variables, states the relations as hypotheses, and — most importantly — says what would count as evidence against them. It is the falsifiable spine the essay opens onto. It is written not to close the question but to make it a real question.

The candidate variables

A physics needs quantities, or at least ordinal magnitudes — things that can be more or less and, in principle, observed. The framework's central terms can be provisionally defined this way:

Weight (of a meaning). The degree to which something matters within a given system — operationally, its capacity to attract attention, organize memory, survive competing demands, and reallocate resources over time. Weight is not assumed; it is inferred from what a person or culture repeatedly returns to, protects, and spends on.

Curvature (of attention). The degree to which attention bends toward a weighted meaning rather than distributing evenly across available inputs. Observable, in principle, as the skew in what gets noticed, named, and acted upon.

Aperture (of the possibility field). The range of actions, identities, and futures that appear genuinely available to a participant. Widened or narrowed; observable through the options a person can articulate and attempt versus those they cannot even bring into view.

Rigidity (of a narrative). The depth of the groove — how strongly a situation is pulled toward a pre-existing plot and its assigned roles, and how resistant that assignment is to disconfirming events.

Participation rate. The frequency and force with which participants reinforce, reshape, or interrupt a given field through attention, interpretation, and action.

None of these is yet a measured quantity. The claim is only that each names something that varies, that the variation has consequences, and that the variation is in principle observable rather than defined into truth.

The candidate relations, stated as hypotheses

The value of stating these as hypotheses is that a hypothesis can be wrong. Each is a claim about how the variables move together, and each could fail:

  1. Weight attracts attention. The more a meaning weighs within a system, the more attention curves toward it. (Fails if heavily weighted meanings routinely leave attention undistorted.)

  2. Curved attention contracts aperture. As attention concentrates around a weighted meaning, the range of perceived possibility narrows. (Fails if intense focus reliably widens the field of available options rather than shrinking it.)

  3. Repetition deepens rigidity. Each re-enactment of a narrative pattern increases its groove — the pattern grows more likely to recur and more resistant to disconfirmation. (Fails if repeated patterns tend to loosen rather than harden.)

  4. Affect sets aperture. Fear contracts the possibility field; curiosity and love widen it. (Fails if fear reliably expands perceived options and curiosity reliably narrows them.)

  5. Participation is the control variable. A pattern persists in a given form only as long as participation continues to reproduce it; a change in participation is what interrupts or transforms it. (Fails if human fields persist unchanged when participation demonstrably shifts.)

The point of writing the failure conditions in the open is discipline. A frame that cannot say how it might be wrong is not a physics; it is a mood. These clauses are what keep the vocabulary from becoming unfalsifiable.

The open questions

Even granting the variables and the hypotheses, the harder work is uncovered. These are the questions a full physics of meaning would have to answer, and they name the research rather than resolve it:

  • What causes a meaning to gain or lose weight? Not what weight does, but what confers it in the first place — and whether weight can be added or removed deliberately.

  • How does attention amplify weight? Attention curves toward the weighted, but attention may also create weight by returning to a thing. If so, the relation is circular, and the circularity needs a mechanism, not a hand-wave.

  • When does narrative stabilize a meaning, and when does it trap it? The same grooving that gives a life coherence can also imprison it in a role. What distinguishes the two?

  • What actually widens or contracts perceived possibility? Beyond affect — what conditions, practices, or relationships move the aperture, and how durably?

  • How does participation reproduce or interrupt a pattern? What is the difference between participation that merely re-runs a field and participation that changes it? This is the practical heart of the whole program.

  • What observation would show the model is wrong? The question that governs all the others. Any answer to the questions above is only worth as much as the evidence that could have contradicted it.

What would count against the model

Falsifiability is not a formality; it is the price of the word physics. Concretely, the framework should be counted as failing — or as needing serious revision — if any of the following held generally rather than occasionally:

  • Meanings of high weight leave attention, memory, and action undistorted.

  • Contracting attention onto a weighted meaning reliably expands the range of perceived possibility.

  • Narrative patterns weaken with repetition rather than deepening.

  • Human fields persist unchanged across clear shifts in participation, or dissolve without any change in it.

  • The variables cannot be distinguished from one another in practice — that is, "weight," "curvature," and "aperture" collapse into a single undifferentiated "importance" with no independent movement.

That last one is the quiet risk worth naming. If the variables never come apart — if they always rise and fall together and can only be described in each other's terms — then the model has the shape of a physics without its substance. Keeping the variables genuinely distinct, each capable of moving while the others hold, is the standard the framework has to meet before the borrowed word is fully paid for.

Status, honestly stated

This is a research program, not a finished physics. The danger it guards against is specific: a set of metaphors so flexible that nothing could ever count against them, admired for reach rather than tested for truth. The guard against that danger is everything above — defined variables that can vary independently, relations stated as falsifiable hypotheses, and failure conditions written in the open where they can be checked.

The ambition is unchanged. The claim is still that meaning, attention, narrative, and participation form a system with recurring, describable relations — that how significance concentrates and moves is not random but patterned, and that the pattern can be studied. What this document adds is only the willingness to be wrong about the particulars, which is the one thing that separates a physics from a beautiful description of one.

The essay is where the framework arrives. This is where it agrees to be tested.
