Somatic Literacy

The body is already reading.

Sensation registers information before the conscious mind has completed its interpretation. Somatic literacy is learning to notice what it already knows.

What It Means

Reading meaning through the body, before language names it.

Ballet trained this first, before I had words for it: the body learns the action before it learns what the action is called. Meaning follows movement, not the other way around. Alignment determined whether extension was even possible. Stillness wasn't the absence of movement — it was movement held in complete internal coherence.

In contact improvisation, the same law shows up from the opposite direction. When one body misrepresents its stability, the other gets hurt. When someone dissociates, the pattern collapses. These aren't moral failures. They're mechanical facts — truth existing only where perception informs action and action feeds back into perception, in real time.

Somatic literacy is learning to trust that the body is already telling the truth, whether or not you've caught up to it yet.

Where This Lives in Practice

The fullest telling of this is in My Phenomenology — ballet, contact improvisation, and what they taught about truth, trust, and consequence. In session, this is the ground beneath Reiki and Soma Flow.
